Mental health refers to a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It encompasses how individuals think, feel, and behave, and it affects their ability to cope with stress, maintain relationships, and make decisions. Mental health is vital for overall well-being and influenced by various factors, including genetics, life experiences, and biology.

Start by adopting healthy habits and self-care practices. This can include maintaining a balanced lifestyle with regular exercise, proper nutrition, and sufficient sleep. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, setting boundaries, and seeking support from loved ones or mental health professionals.

Persistent sadness, feelings or hopelessness, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, loss of interest in activities, difficulty concentrating, irritability, anxiety, excessive worry, social withdrawal, fatigue and changes in behavior and personality. It’s important to note that symptoms can vary depending on the specific mental health condition.

If you or someone you know is experiencing persistent or worsening mental health symptoms that interfere with daily functioning, it may be an indication that professional help is needed. Other signs include feeling overwhelmed, unable to cope, or having thoughts of self-harm or suicide. It’s important to seek help from a mental health professional who can conduct a thorough assessment and provide appropriate guidance, support, and treatment options.

These can include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. Therapy can involve various modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), individual and family psychotherapy. Medications prescribed by PCP or psychiatrist can help manage symptoms for certain conditions.

Additionally, lifestyle changes, support groups, and self-help strategies can also be beneficial components of a treatment plan.

Supporting a loved one requires empathy, understanding, and non-judgement. Be a good listener and offer safe space for them to express their feelings. Encourage them to seek professional help and accompany them to appointments if needed. Educate yourself about their specific condition to better understand their experiences. Show your support through regular communication, checking in on their well-being, and being patient and available when they need someone to talk to.

Yes! These can include practicing stress reduction techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness, engaging in regular physical exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, getting sufficient sleep, setting realistic goals, practicing self-compassion, engaging in hobbies, or activities that bring joy, and seeking support from trusted friends or family members. However, it’s important that self-help strategies may not be sufficient for everyone.
